I am programmer. We solve problems.
In 2017 I had a blog which used the then new AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) but due to it’s format no sharing plugins allowed me to set my own desired media, nor desired descriptions. Especially for Pinterest.
So, I made my own version – the same sharing buttons, but to find the image I had already set for the normal version. The blog had a lot of posts, and I being programmer, would not go and manually set them for AMP. As people say: “Work smart, not hard”.
If you have not used Pinterest – you may think is social network, but in fact is visual search engine. People click on an image and go to your website. If you get an media people like, they would save it and it would get recommended to other people. You multiply that and it goes viral.
So, I needed to make specific image people liked. Not one I thought they like, but they liked to be saved. As I said I am programmer, and not a designer. I would limit my design skills to common sense.
So, I published an ad explaining that I needed a number of custom graphics for Pinterest. Fortunately, around 30 people messaged me and offered to make graphics. I liked few and continued to work with them, I attached their images to the posts.
Some had success, some not. But I found out what works and what does not. You would be surprised.
Doing everything took me valuable time. But still, I knew that I could do this even faster. So I created something to do the images for me. At first, it wasn’t automated, but with time it made great pins, and people liked them and made new pins.
And then… it went viral. Made millions of impressions on Pinterest, and millions of clicks
